Yesterday afternoon a rescuer from Serbia posted a video of 3 little pups barely able to walk, covered in flies laying eggs on them, dehydrated, starving and as close to death as any tiny pup could be. 3 had managed to crawl out of the bag they were dumped in, two sadly were dead inside the bag.
As you will see in this video one had fallen into the stream that was close by and unable to walk properly, too young and just too weak would have surely died.
The women who took this video had no resources, their husbands would not allow the to take these babies to safety, they were limited as many rescuers in Serbia are to help these little ones...and so they were left there and the video posted in hopes of finding help....
Well they got the help, as soon as we saw this video we started contacting every animal rescuer who is part of the AAFA network in Serbia and even Bosnia to find someone who could help. Who could go and rescue these puppies and get them to safety.
We would not have been able to rest knowing these babies were out there alone, fighting for their lives without trying to help.
Within an hour of this video being seen by us, our wonderful network of rescuers in Serbia had found the ladies who took the video, the village , the exact spot where these babies were.
The same ladies who took the video who broke their hearts having to leave those pups there just hours after were returning to take them in overnight thanks to a charity thousands of miles away in the United Kingdom Action Aid for Animals.
Knowing in the morning a driver organised by a wonderful rescuer Dusica would be collecting them , the going to the vet then onto her home whilst we search for a foster carer who would be willing and able to care for these little dogs.
Yesterday after they went and collected the 3 pups you see in the film, they fed them, bathed them and kept them warm. Was all they could do until the driver arrived in the morning. They were covered in maggots and fly eggs, they were starving and so very weak. Missing their mum, scared and not knowing what was happening to them.
These 3 little pups are some of the lucky ones, they became part of the AAFA family, we will pay for their care and anything they need, will send aid and food etc. However there are thousands just like these little ones who every day find themselves in the same situation, but those ones are not seen, are not filmed and do not come into the line of sight of Action Aid for Animals or the Serbian Rescuers and they do perish.....
This is the reality of Serbia and change is needed, sterilisation programes, better animal welfare, prosecutions of animal abusers and backyard breeders.... Until the Serbian government acknowledges and admits to what is needed and allows the help to enter Serbia...Nothing will change.
In the meantime charities like Action Aid for Animals and Balkan Underdogs will interlink and network with the Serbian rescuers doing what we can, if only a few lives are saved at least it is something.
But we cant do this without your help.....
For these pups we have to find the funds to pay for their vet care, supplement milk and foster care. Please consider donating to enable us to be there for these and other animals not just in Serbia but across the Balkans and Europe
