We chat to the inspiring head of the American charity Romania Animal Rescue Incorporated about the journey that led one woman determined to help the strays of Romania and from this determination to start up her own charity that is now admired and respected for their 1000 dog spayathons and ongoing support of sterilisation clinics throughout Romania.

Last week our animal ambulance arrives at the ICAR shelter to donate aid to over 200 dogs.

ICAR Sanctuary in Romania cares for over 200 dogs. Many victims of abuse and cruelty , with limited resources and so many mouths to feed and care for. Our Animal ambulance last week stuffed full with aid arrived at the shelter , it was a very welcome site by many.
Below are just a few of items that we donated to help this local animal welfare group and its amazing work to help the strays.

Food is so important, not just for the nutrients and vitamins but for the energy that is needed to keep these dogs alive in sub zero conditions.

Leads and collars make the dogs easier to control. to get used to being on the lead but also is a mark to the dog catchers that these dogs are NOT theres to take.

The waterproof coats will be worn by the dogs outside, the non waterproof will be worn by more vulnerable or  poorly dogs inside. In sub zero temperatures both are desperately needed

Dog beds are not just about making a dog comfy, these can be filled with straw and also create a gap between the cold freezing concrete floors and the dogs body. These literally do save lives.

Tarpaulin and plastic sheeting not only acts as a cover from the snow and rain but also as shade from the sun.

Blankets, duvets, cushions and sheets all make life for the strays a little more easier. For the dogs outside the cushions will be covered in plastic.

By having bowls in the shelter this allows the food to be distributed more easily also allowing more submissive dogs to have a chance to eat without being frightened off by the alpha dogs who will be too busy eating from there own bowls arther than from the floor.

Also obviously this prevents the risk of disease being digested by the dogs from food otherwise would be put on the floor.

Flea repellant shampoos literally save lives. In the UK fleas are an irritant, in Romania they spread deadly disease.

Every single day we step in to help new strays who need rescuing

Every single day we are stepping into action to help the strays in varying ways. The two doggies below are today's early arrivals on our rescue list.

Please do contact us to be kept updated on our progress to help these two furangels, and if you can help our charity to continue its work please let us know.

Small 3 legged female needing our help

This Little 3 legged girl has obviously been a victim of abuse, as well as loosing a limb she has also had her tail cut off!!! This sadly is not an uncommon sight in Romania as the animals there are targeted to commit such cruelty upon.

Though we help many disabled dogs such as this one, we are not known for finding homes for such dogs and so do not attract that kind of adopter. So what we do, we collaborate with disabled dogs rescues here in the UK. We will pay for foster, medical care and vaccines etc and get her ready to travel then we will be handing her over to one of the disabled dog rescues here who will find her the most perfect home with people who are experienced with looking after and caring for dogs with different needs. In this case, the lovely rescue who have agreed to find her a home is TriwardsUK.

We will keep you updated on her progress, first....She needs to be caught!

Sweet gentle female begging for food outside a supermarket in Craiova.

Today this little girl was brought to our attention, so many dogs have to rely on humans to survive, in Romania this means they are constantly putting their lives on the line when they beg for a slice of bread. Many find who they think is a kindly human giving them food is actually a cold hearted person who has laced that same bread with poison.

At this time we are trying to find foster for this girl, then she will be taken to the vets, microchipped, vaccinated and will remain in foster until we can find her a loving forever home so she will never have to beg again.

RESCUED

Yes, we got her. Our wonderful network of rescuers did it. This little girl will never again in her life have to beg for food from humans, Never again will chance every time if that human will give her something to eat or beat  her.

She was taken to the vets, given full check up, microchipped and vaccinated. She is now in foster and character assessed then we will find her a forever home.

OLIVER, VICTIM OF ALL TOO COMMON ABUSE IN ROMANIA NOW SAFE UNDER OUR CHARITIES WING

This is Oliver  a victim of vile animal abuse that is all too common in Romania. As you can see from the photos he had his leg dipped in a corrosive chemical and left to suffer in agony whilst the flesh literally fell away from the limb.

Our charity has stepped in and will ensure he receives everything he needs, including the chance of a home when he is fully recovered and ready for adoption.

This poor little guy was bound for an agonising death, but was rescued by an amazing lady who is part of our network and after he received treatment and surgery he is now recovering in foster, he still has a long way to go but he is getting there.

If you would like updates of Oliver and how he is getting along, or are interested in offering him a forever home where he will know only human kindness and be part of a loving family. Please do contact us

The lives saved of 6 lambs due for Easter Slaughter

In Romania it is not just the strays that are treated cruelly without compassion. Also cattle and working animals are dealt with in the same merciless and barbaric way.

These are 6 small lambs that literally a few hours ago were cruelly bound and laid on a concrete floor , searing heat beating down on them ready for anyone to come along and buy them, to slaughter and treat them as they wished.

Thankfully Liliana Ambrus who is among our network of rescuers and her incredible group Liliana and Friends Romanian Rescue Group negotiated a price of these innocent lambs for 200 euros. They then found them safe foster homes where they will never know pain and cruelty again, living out their natural lives as sheep should...Without there throats sliced open and left to die an agonising death.

We saw the appeal to help raise the funds, 40 euros had already been raised, we stepped in and donated the rest.

Below is a photo of one of the lambs now safe and sound in its foster home. We wish him and his siblings  the very happiest of Easters and are grateful that our charity was able to help in some way towards saving their lives.

For many years people could not understand it when we time and again stated that Dog killing is Big business in Romania.

The Link below will take you to video that explains in video far better than we can in words. This is what our charity is up against and others like us battle on day in and day out..Until the truth is known far and wide this corruption that involves the brutality upon innocent strays will continue...Please help and spread the word.

Sidney an old and blind dog left for dead by his abusers, now safe in foster and under our charities wing getting ready for his new life in the UK.

A few days ago one of our rescuers found an old dog laying in the road. Blood and fur on the floor around and near him, a rock with blood and fur surrounding it...

This poor old dog had suffered the same fate as hundreds do every day in Romania. He had been a target for animal abusers who had chased him, caught him and then smashed his head leaving him to die in the road.

Denisa (Rescuer) thought he was dead and her heart broke at yet another victim of animal abuse in her country. She took some photos for our files we collate as evidence to put forward to city halls etc when we are attempting to persuade them to act against such abuses, to discourage there citizens against such things.

As she was taking photos of the scene for us, she stopped for a moment. When she had found this poor old dog there really was no signs of life, no breathing nothing. But, for a second she thought she saw movement from his chest....She took a closer look in hopes of some signs of life.

To her utter amazement the old dog opened his eyes and started to breath, this poor thing had not died, yes he was close, but something inside of him made him want to live, to not give up.He raised his head and Denisa was over the moon.

What is even more sickening, is it is was immediately apparent that not only was this an old dog, but this poor old fellow who had for his entire life on the streets known only cruelty, starvation and the worse type of abuses....he was also blind. What chance did he stand against the gangs that take pleasure in hunting the strays both dogs and cats, infact anything that takes their fancy to torture and kill for fun?

She carried him to our vets in the city where he was treated for his head injuries and given an MOT and given basic vaccinations to ensure he did not get unwell during what should be his recovery. Then Denisa carried him back to his home where she is nursing him back to health and he is doing very well.

We named him Sidney, and also found among our foster carers in the UK a wonderful lady who is experienced with rescued dogs with disabilities, she agreed to take him on and will look after him until we can find that very special forever home or for as long as he needs foster care for. He will be travelling to the UK in just over a month after his quarantine period and when the vet confirms he is well enough to travel.

There are hundreds of dogs like Sidney who every day in one form or another need our help, need our resources  need our network of rescuers to be there for them.

You can enable us to keep on being there for dogs like Sidney by checking out our charities website www.actionaidforannimals.com there are so many ways you can help. If you are that very special type of family who have fallen in love with this sweet old boy and would like to offer him a forever home for as long as he has left on this earth, or simply to sponsor a dog like Sidney to ensure we can carry on caring him and others....Please contact us as soon as possible.

Jack and Jason, two small puppies left to fend for themselves on the streets of Constanta ,Romania. Beaten and stones thrown at them, suffering from starvation..Our Team at this moment on there way to rescue them.

Jack
These two puppies we have named Jack and Jason only a matter of a few months of age have had survive in the cruel streets of Constanta. They have suffered starvation and the cruelest of human cruelty.

Our team this evening are rushing to theirs and another dogs aid after us finding safe places for them at a shelter a lovely rescuer who is part of our network owns and manages. ( ICAR Shelter)...

Another wonderful rescuer from Constanta ( Alz Manolache) has been feeding them and tonight was the person who caught them and assisted them into there travelling crates.
Jason
These two little guys will be taken to the shelter, given good food and lots of care, then off to the vet clinic for a check up and vaccinations etc...

When they are both healthy and ready for a forever home we will try our best to find them each that perfect home. Will add updates here as when we receive them.

Thank you for your ongoing support and donations, without you enabling our charity to organise such rescues and take care of the strays just like we have Jack and Jason...They would have died a horrific and agonising death.

RESCUED

Ready for the journey that will change their lives forever.

Sharon, gentle sweet disabled dog living on the streets - Beaten, abused, urinated upon, tonight being rescued by our team and taken to safety.

This is Sharon, an incredible little dog who has fought disease cruelty and abuse and has survived but shows the physical scars.

This poor little dog as well as having minor neurological problems caused by distemper was also purposefully ran over a few months ago and her legs have healed badly. Because of her inability to move away from abusers quickly she literally has been a still target. Having adults and children alike thrown bricks and stones at her, kicking and beating her, even standing urinating over her... Hideous and vile crimes of abuse

Well, this evening, our team are rushing to her aid and having found a shelter with a quarantine area and facilities to care for her etc in Bucharest Romania, this little girl will  be safe and only ever loved from now on.

When she is well enough and whatever can be done to fix her legs we will have fixed. Then, we will set about finding her that very special home where she will never know cruelty, abuse and inhumane treatment ever again.

Thanks to the Romanian Carers ( Maria Gadea and Miheala Maria) feeding her regularly  doing what they could for her and of course ICAR shelter where she will stay and be cared for. Sharon, now has a happy and safe future to look forward to rather than the indescribable life that previously laid before her including no doubt a horrific death.

Thank you to all our supporters and donators, without your continued help we would not be there for animals that need us the most.

Just a small insight to what we have been working on and achieved recently

What has AAFA done this week?
Because we are very much a grass roots charity we tend to just get on with the job at hand rather than splatter it about the internet of exactly how wonderful we are. Because of this, maybe people do not realise the huge task our charity undertakes week in and week out. Below are just a few examples of how we have helped animals in need, in various forms over the last couple of weeks.

We may not be one of the most high profile charities out there ( we are too busy saving lives than working on our image) but you know what, we really are one of the most hardworking and do get the job done no matter how mucky it gets.

Please consider donating to us, find out more on our website www.actionaidforanimals.com enable us to keep caring for those most in need.

  • Donated for foster to keep a mum and her pups that Rescuer Liliana Ambrus rescued safe
  • Donated for a kennels to built so that 3 mums and there pups living by railway can be took and cared for safely in Craiova

RED ALERT - PLEASE SIGN OUR PETITION AND DEMAND ACTION IS TAKEN BY CROATIAN AUTHORITIES AGAINST A MAN WHO STARVES HIS ANIMALS AND ALLOWS THEM TO EAT EACH OTHER ALIVE

Croatia is about to enter the European Union, its animal abuse and cruelty for far too long has gone unhindered due to corrupt Governmental bodies and authorities. Now the curtain is being pulled back and the extent of horror for the animals is now becoming evident.

This is just one case among thousands that is now becoming known where authorities are on the side of the abuser and are blatantly allowing such cruelty to continue despite becoming a member state.

NOW is the time for us all within Europe to stand up for the animals in Croatia, the rescuers there have been left to fight alone for too long. Let us all stand together in one voice, along with the animal welfare groups in Croatia and together tell the government that no longer will animal abuse and cruelty be tolerated in a country belonging to a European member, no longer will we fellow Europeans allow our fellow colleagues in Croatia to fight this war against cruelty alone.

You can add your voice to this cause  by completing the 5 steps below.

1)  CLICK HERE to goto the petition
2) Add your own comment into the box before signing. Keep it polite but forceful.
3) Sign the petition
4) Then share and cross post the link to this red alert across Europe and across the world asking all to take part and be a voice for justice, a voice for the animals.
5) Contact the authorities yourself below via your own personal email. You can choose to use the letter template below or use your own words, remember to keep it professional and correct.

Sample Letter:

To whom it may concern
Reference: The non prosecution of the animal abuser Branko Borkovic

I was sickened to watch a video where obviously two starving dogs were eating a horse alive, all belonging to the same person, the above mentioned Branko Borkovic.

I was even more disgusted to learn that your city hall/police department have failed to prosecute this person despite overwhelming video evidence of the crimes and the terrible condition of his animals. As a soon to be European Member state I am sure I do not have to remind you that Croatia is expected to behave in a civilised and lawful manner. However it is blatantly obvious that your government officials and veterinary officers still reside in the dark ages and will continue to ignore the cruelty and abuse of animals carried out by your citizens.

I demand you take action, to open and investigation and to send a competent veterinary officer along with the local animal welfare group to investigate this matter and to examine the animals that remain on Branko Borkovics home.

Considering the overwhelming evidence against this man I do expect at the very least for him to be prosecuted and to be made an example of for others within  your country to realise that no longer will Croatia allow such cruelty to continue without being acted upon in the correct and legal manner.

Signed

As many of you may know we have been helping an animal rescue shelter in Maoland (one of many we help)

Here was a shelter where two kind souls were trying there best to help over 300 dogs. With disease and unwanted births adding to the problem we stepped into help.

Every week a veterinarian has visited the shelter and vaccinated and treated all the dogs paid for by our charity, also for the fuel etc for unsterilised dogs to be taken to a local clinic to be sterilised.

By these simple two actions this will reduce the disease and unwanted births and make things slightly more managable at the shelter and stop things spiralling out of control again.

We would not have been able to have made such an impact on the lives of over 300 dogs if our donators and supporters had not been behind us enabling us to help in such a way.

Please visit our website www.actionaidforaninals.com and donate what you are able to enable us to be there for dogs just like these in the future.

Thank you from the AAFA Team and the 300+ rescued strays at Maoland. Without you, we would not have been there for these poor dogs when they needed us.

Croatia - Action Aid for Animals petition forces review of animal abuse case and the hopeful dismissal of incompetent veterinarian

$

0
May 2013 our network of Animal rescuers alerted us to a horrendous case of animal abuse, cruelty and non legal action. This was a case of a man who bred show horses for a living, allowed one to become a walking skelton , then tied it up for his equally starving dogs to eat it alive.

When the authorities were called in, as per usual nothing was done. The veterinarian involved unbelievably after watching the evidence ( Viewer discretion advised) https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=yC6wPj4iJz0#at=445 and seeing for himself the horrific state of the mans animals at his farm declared there was no wrong doing!

This was a blatant case of deliberate animal cruelty and neglect, yet the authorities as is normally the case in Croatia choose to look the other way. So our charity decided to force them into re-examining the evidence and to dismiss the excuse of a veterinarian involved.

Thanks to our petitioners and the 200 of you that took the time to email the authorities we are pleased to announce that the matter not only made national news, but more importantly has forced the re-examination and we hope the instant dismissal of the vet.

Somebody informed us that there was “a big black dog tied with a rope to a tree house in the park placed in-between buildings complex in Borovo, Vukovar. One group of kids was beating him while the others climbed the tree house to spit on him. We went to check the situation…

In the conversation with parents, children and neighbors who witnessed the abuse in the park, we determined that 3 individuals (2 girls and 1 boy) abused dogs continuously in the following ways: wrapping in a blanket and kicking, tying with ropes, dragging and kicking, tying to a tree house - kicking and spitting, imprisonment in abandoned houses (houses left from the war 20years ago) without food and water, tying to benches and also leaving without food and water exposed to all weather conditions and trespassers, till the next time they come on the same spot to play (this took days sometimes - we found a malnourished, dehydrated puppy - after recovery we returned him to his rightful owners) and also those more “classical” methods: throwing stones and whatever’s nearby.

We also learnt that the other group of children, their mothers and some residents in the area of the park were feeding the dogs and some boys made a shelter for the dogs, that was completely destroyed by previously mentioned two girls. They also attacked the boys and began to spit on both them and the dogs, the youngest child was beaten up as his mom stated, and no one reacted to that madness in popular kid’s park, none from all the people out there, and there were at least 100 since it’s a huge playground in-between the apartment complex…
Kids will go unpunished for the abuse of those weaker than themselves - other younger, smaller children and animals, those who know who they are should be reporting such things so others could peacefully enjoy in the park ... And you can not live thinking "that can’t happen to my child / pet, these things do not happen in my neighborhood...“ well they certainly can, things are generally getting out of control over here....
Kids gathering into groups….and those who don’t know the difference between the right and wrong are bullying everyone. It’s not their fault, the culprit may be the society or the way they were raised.

I think it's clear in what kind of place do we live in, this is Vukovar ... The damaged city. Damaged in all the ways that word can describe. No matter what goes on on TV, big speeches about tolerance in our city etc…Not true, people can’t stand each other in general no matter the national, religious or any other affiliation, they don’t tolerate any of us who deal with animal issues, they pretend not to see a group of children beating weaker children, they glance at animals with disgust. Most of those documentaries about new, better life in reconstructed, repaired and renewed city of Vukovar, are just some things we all hope to see one day, so we’re actually speaking about lies packaged in a colorful box with a pretty bow, since this city has become an unhealthy environment to live in. Normal life is possible only for those who lack eyes and ears, ignorant toward reality.
People are frustrated by the overall state of the country, and they express those frustrations in hundreds of different ways. Constant fights for something they believe could do some good, but in the end it sums up to promoting hatred…The anxiety reflects in everyone.

Due to abuse, dogs are getting more restless by the day…it’s not their fault but eventually they’re going to be the ones blamed for all the incidents in the park ...
Our neighbors and some trespassers began to attack us (verbally and almost physically) for supposedly “bringing fierce dangerous dogs that attack humans”, several men started attacking the dogs we were feeding right in front of us, trying to beat them up with umbrellas. On the other occasion, two women started beating the dogs – one with the walking stick, the other with a crutch – now can u believe that?! 3 of 5 Dogs that we found in the park were all sticky from saliva and limping, with various injuries and completely frightened (Like German Shepherd Eve that we picked up, she had bloody paws, didn’t respond to anything at all, refused to eat, didn’t wanna walk so two of us had to carry her, she was just lying there in the middle of that same park, gave up of life…
We placed her in our safe house - a house that is unfortunately full, she’s still recovering, afraid of, and I mean this literally, her own shadow…) which is, again, a confirmation of all the things stated above.... But these doggies still blindly follow most people and have faith in them, approaching everyone...they’re easy to lure, so I can’t emphasize enough how urgent they need at least a temporary accommodation!

Note: The statement is 100% without exaggeration used to induce empathy, all of this is, unfortunately, the only truth...

Action Aid for Animals, one of the first UK registered charities entering Croatia to provide support and aid to the victims of animal abuse and abandonment

We are very proud to announce to our supporters and donators that in just over two weeks time Action Aid for Animals in collaboration with our network of Croatian rescuers and participating veterinary clinics will be launching a first in Croatia, a sterilisation voucher project.

Our network of rescuers will be entering there local communities and not only educating citizens of the benefit of sterilisation but also handing to each person a voucher that will entitle them to take there own pets or community animals to be spayed or neutered Free of charge.

This is a three way project and can only be successful by each group providing what is needed to obtain the joint goal.

  • Action Aid for Animals - We will provide the funding for this project
  • Participating Veterinary Clinics will provide discounted rates for sterilisation
  • Croatian Network of Rescuers and Carers -Providing the local link to educate and distribute the vouchers
Each participating clinic will be allocated a code, each voucher assigned its own number to ensure our charities funds are being used effectively and properly, also allowing us to monitor the project and confirm how many sterilisation in each area are achieved.

Why is this project so important? It is a simple matter of maths,  1 x breeding female and her off spring in their lifetime can create over approx 67,000 unwanted strays between them. 67,000 potential victims of animal abuse and abandonment. By nipping the potential in the bud we will be tackling the stray problem at its root cause.

Each sterilisation will be costing our charity 25-40 Euros , averaging around £30 each voucher.

If you can help us to achieve our goal please donate to our charity referencing Cro/Spay with your donation.
